The two answers

"How often should I change my oil, and which oil should I use?" There's no single honest answer to that.   • Variant or trim, where the manufacturer treats it separately
  • Market — the country or region your car was built for and sold in

Pull these from wherever your manufacturer actually exposes them: a manual selector, the document's cover page, a registration document, or a build sheet. If a field is genuinely unknown, mark it "clarification needed" rather than guess. And don't infer an engine, a powertrain, a variant, or a market from a model name or from wherever the car happens to be sitting right now — a model name alone doesn't always tell you which engine is under the hood, and a car can be built to one market's specification while registered and driven in another.

Find the governing documents

Once you know which car you have, the next job is tracking down every document that governs the decision. The schedule and the oil requirement don't always live in the same place.

Start with a short lookup sequence rather than hunting at random: go to the manufacturer's official owner-manual portal or manual selector first, and treat the dealer service department, a glovebox printed copy, or a VIN-based document lookup tool as the other places these documents typically live. Enter the vehicle details you just confirmed, check that the document's cover and stated market actually match your car, then search inside it for the schedule and oil-specification terms by name — don't just skim for the first number you see.

Take the 2025 US-market Toyota Camry maintenance guide. It doesn't print the viscosity figure itself — instead it sends the owner to the separate owner's manual for the viscosity that matches their vehicle and engine type. Read only the maintenance guide, and you'd have the schedule but not the oil requirement.

Ford's documentation for the 2022 Ranger raises a related but distinct point, one worth holding onto exactly as written. In this Ranger context, Ford describes its online manual as carrying the latest information, and separately warns that it may differ from the manual originally supplied with the vehicle — which Ford identifies as the primary source. That's a narrow notice about one car line's documentation set, not a general rule about which format of manual to trust across every make, and it doesn't by itself tell you how to settle a disagreement between two documents.

So check every document your manufacturer publishes that touches the decision — the maintenance schedule, the owner's manual, any separate specification sheet — rather than assuming the first one you open has the whole answer. And if what you find is missing, ambiguous, or pulling in different directions, the sound move is written vehicle-specific clarification from the manufacturer, its authorised representative, or qualified service, rather than picking whichever document seems more convenient.

Copy when service is due

Once you have the right document open, copy the interval down as a whole rule, not just a single number pulled out of context. Keep the units, and keep every condition attached to it.

A schedule may include distance, elapsed time, an oil-life monitor, engine hours, use categories, or conditions tied to how the car is driven, but only when the applicable schedule actually states them, so copy every applicable qualifier exactly as written rather than assuming your car follows the same structure as someone else's.

Copy the oil requirement

Viscosity grade is the figure most owners already recognise — it's the number on the oil bottle, or in a manual's oil table. But copy the exact figure for your car straight from your applicable manufacturer documentation. Don't work it out from general knowledge.

Some manufacturer documents state a further, separate requirement alongside viscosity. In the 2022 US-market Ford Ranger manual, viscosity and a separate Ford specification show up as two distinct fields rather than one combined figure — the second is a named performance requirement or approval the manufacturer attaches on top of the viscosity grade. That's the pattern worth watching for: record the viscosity wording and any additional specification, approval, standard, or qualifier your document actually states, as separate entries.

If your document only gives you one of the two, leave the other blank, or mark it "not found in the checked document." Don't fill the gap from an oil retailer, a marketing page, a forum thread, a different engine in the family, or either example above — none of them is your manufacturer's documentation for your car.

What your service history proves

If you bought the car used, or you're missing a stretch of records, you're working with three kinds of evidence, and they're not interchangeable. Toyota's inspected maintenance guide gives a useful shape for a documented entry: service date, odometer reading, a description of the service performed, and any installed-parts information where it's recorded. Use those same fields whenever you actually have paperwork, a stamp, or an invoice to point to. A reported entry — something a previous owner told you happened, with nothing to back it up — gets recorded the same way but flagged as unverified. An unknown entry gets no invented date and no assumed service.

Treat a gap in the paperwork as unknown or unverified rather than evidence either way: it doesn't establish whether the service happened or didn't, and it doesn't establish engine condition.
