Run a US recall search

The US NHTSA service treats a VIN or licence-plate search differently from a year/make/model search. The first asks whether this specific vehicle needs recall repair; the second returns broader material across a whole model range. Record which one you used, the date, and exactly what it displayed — that context matters as much as the result itself.

A displayed result of zero unrepaired recalls is not the same as a clean bill of health. That result carries stated exclusions: repaired recalls, some recent recalls where affected VINs haven't been identified yet, most recalls older than 15 years, certain small-manufacturer recalls, non-safety campaigns, and international vehicles all fall outside what the search shows you. Read the result with those limits in mind before you draw any conclusion about the car's recall history.

Ask about a part

FordParts.com, the US Ford parts catalogue, takes either a model search or a VIN search, and it describes the VIN route as giving its "most accurate" results — its own comparative wording for that catalogue, not a promise that a part will fit. For Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles, its search also accepts the final eight characters of the VIN — a narrow, named allowance rather than a general shortcut. Either way, a catalogue match is a provider-specific search result, not a fitment guarantee — bring it to the supplier or workshop and ask directly whether it fits your car.

Check the provider and region

A few more provider- and region-specific points are worth keeping in one place, because they shape how much weight you can put on any given interface.

Stellantis Europe's eLearn tool accepts a registration plate or a VIN as its entry point. Its own notice states that the publication data behind it are indicative and can go out of date after technical, commercial, or country-law changes — worth taking at face value, since no specific vehicle result from that interface was checked here.

At the regulatory level, the EU electronic certificate-of-conformity framework set out in Regulation (EU) 2024/1061 uses the VIN as the vehicle-specific key for structured certificate data, with access provided to Member State approval authorities. The regulation establishes that authority-level access; it doesn't itself establish that an owner can pull up the car's complete configuration from a public interface.

Registration and recall rules, privacy and inspection rules, and lookup rules generally differ by provider and by country, and the receiving service's current terms and applicable local rules govern what you may submit before you send an identifier anywhere. That's why a route accepted on one interface — a registration plate, say — may not exist on the next at all: each one runs on its own provider's terms and its own jurisdiction's rules.
