Neither option wins by default. What tips it is whether the reasoning behind the proposed part already rests on findings specific to your car, or whether it rests on the label alone.

A recurring symptom

Picture an owner with an intermittent drivability symptom — the car hesitates now and then — and a basic printout naming a sensor. Nothing else is written down: no test results, no notes on when it happens.

Approving the named part arranges a replacement, but the owner still needs a plan for checking whether the hesitation stops. Authorising a bounded diagnostic stage instead means agreeing its scope and charge up front, then asking for the findings before any further work begins. Either way, a label with nothing behind it leaves real uncertainty on the table, and choosing further diagnosis doesn't promise the eventual fix will cost less.

A code after recent work

Now picture a code appearing not long after some unrelated or uncertain work was done on the car. It's tempting to assume the two are connected.

Approving the proposed part treats it as the next repair in line and still needs an agreed way to confirm the result afterward. Authorising diagnosis first lets the owner mention the timing as useful context and ask for findings specific to the vehicle, without treating the timing itself as proof. The recent work might be relevant. It might not be. Reporting it is useful; assuming it settles the question isn't.

A safety-related warning

Last scenario: the code report comes with a warning touching braking, steering, stability, or another safety-critical system.

Here the comparison above simply doesn't apply yet. Neither authorising the replacement nor authorising further diagnosis tells you whether the car is safe to drive right now. The owner follows the exact manual, and if safe operation is uncertain, avoids driving and seeks qualified help before any repair decision gets made. One example of how this authorisation conversation gets formalised: for covered consumer work at a Motor Ombudsman-accredited UK business, under the 2025 Code, diagnostic or exploratory work is treated as its own cause-finding stage.
